[00:00:24] [SPEAKER_01] After Action Report. Burning Man, hot and dusty hellscape crawling with tech bros and sparkle chaps, or sexy paradise where the most interesting people in the world are waiting for you in the orgy dome. For Imogen, it was definitely the latter, and she's here to tell us all about her adventures at Burning Man. Imogen, welcome to the show.
[00:00:45] [SPEAKER_02] Hi, thank you.
[00:00:46] [SPEAKER_01] So, of course, before we get to what you did, I would like to ask people who you are. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, so I'm a mid-40s bisexual woman on the West Coast. I actually do transgender care and gender-affirming care, so I'm really deeply connected to your community.
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_01] Oh, well, thank you. The LGBT community, particularly the trans community right now, needs all of the allies with spines that we can possibly gather, particularly trans people who are in the crosshairs of this horrifying administration. But this show is an escape from all that. We're not going to dwell, but good to acknowledge. Thank you for the work that you do. So, you wanted to come on and share an experience. Where did this experience happen? I think that tells us a little bit about where this is going to go.
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_02] Yes, this happened at Burning Man.
[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_01] It all happens at Burning Man.
[00:01:36] [SPEAKER_02] That's true, very much. Yeah, so this experience is sort of a culmination of a couple of experiences. I had slept with a campmate a few years ago. He brought his girlfriend to our camp the following year. She and him are open, and so when I was talking to her, she was basically like, Yeah, if you do want to hook up with him again, you can. And I was like, well, what about you?
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_02] And she said, well, sure, I always have to have a dick in the room. And I, you know, that's fair.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_01] Words I live by, but yeah.
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_02] Honestly. So, we eventually did have a threesome pretty quickly into the event. I think it was mainly by circumstance. We get some nasty dust storms out there, and you kind of just find yourself hunkered down, and we found ourselves naked. So, that happened. Coincidentally, one woman who I had worked with in Seattle, of all places, a few years earlier was camped next to us.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_02] She introduced me to her boyfriend there open, and him and I actually ended up having a really good connection. We had a handful of dates, and we hooked up. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, he would, like, come and get me first thing in the morning and take me to Sunrise, and really, you can do some really cute stuff out there. Then, one morning, he brought a canister for whippets and his girlfriend.
[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_02] And so, we proceeded to have a very interesting threesome where we would take little doses of whippets and, you know, hands and mouths and everything everywhere. And it's really great because with whippets, you can control your dose. Like, you can be very gone, or you can just have this, like, beautiful, like, body high.
[00:03:29] [SPEAKER_01] So, were these threesomes that you had at Burning Man your first threesomes, or were threesomes in your repertoire?
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_02] I had done some versions, not like everybody having PIV, and it was a little more amateur hour threesomes, but, you know.
[00:03:48] [SPEAKER_01] The swingers used to call it soft swap, where it's not about penetrative sex necessarily, but all the other things that are awesome, all about on their own.
[00:03:56] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah, so these were my first, like, everything is everywhere. And so, that was really lovely. I had never done that before with the whippets, too. So, my gosh, that is really a beautiful experience.
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_01] Sometimes threesomes go south, particularly for the, if there's a couple involved and there's a third. A threesome can quickly go south for a couple. If they haven't had one before, they haven't talked about it, they haven't anticipated that moment during threesomes when threesomes become twosomes and someone's outside the twosome for a moment. Did either of these threesomes, your threesomes at Burning Man with PIV and everything going everywhere, did either of them go south, or were they both successful?
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_02] They were both very successful. They were all very experienced, had had threesomes or other orgies before. And I don't recall a single, like, oh, shit, what am I supposed to do right now? You know, it was very, very nicely done. Which then brings me to, we were at a camp together called the Spank Bank and learning how to have good etiquette with spanking.
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_02] And I kind of looked and I was like, guys, we should go to the orgy dome. And somebody said, that is the best idea you've ever had.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_01] Okay, so for people who haven't heard of Burning Man, all four of them, and for people who don't know what an orgy dome is, could you quickly just, let's back all the way up. What is Burning Man in one sentence? And what is the world famous, world infamous orgy dome?
[00:05:32] [SPEAKER_02] Burning Man is a utopia of art, culture, music, and everything under every life's umbrella in a week. And the orgy dome is one of the camps where they facilitate a very well-curated experience for people who want to come in and have orgies.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_01] And so Burning Man is this city that appears in the desert once a year. It's like, what is it, 50,000, 60,000 people? One day there's nobody there and the next day there's this kind of temporary ersatz civilization where there's a lot of music, there's a lot of art, there's a lot of human connection, there's a lot of recreational drug use. But there's also a lot of, I hear from people who've been, it's not my scene, people have been, since I moved to the West Coast 35 years ago, people are trying to get me to go to Burning Man.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_01] And I'm just like, I don't even like to camp. And I don't like crowds and I don't like music and I don't like to dance. So Burning Man isn't for me, but for the people that it is for, what do you get out of it? You go regularly. Besides the occasional awesome, whippet, enhanced threesome, what do you get out of it?
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_02] I really love art. I like being involved in big art and maker spaces and that kind of culture. It's the most fun I've ever had. I'll be straight up. Like you don't have a job usually while you're there. So you have every day, all day, whatever you want to do. There's yoga, there's art to do. There's food, so much food. You can look through the book and find different kinds of food. So it really is a, it's a city of 70,000 people. So if you think of like a city of 70,000 people is going to have a lot of shit to do.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_02] And so you go for finding out what you want to find out and do what you want to do.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_01] And do I need to go to know that it's not for me or can I know it's not for me without having been?
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_02] 100% you should go. It's joyous. It is absolutely joyous.
[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_01] I've never met somebody who goes to Burning Man who thinks that somebody shouldn't go to Burning Man. Everyone who goes to Burning Man is a Burning Man evangelist, which I respect. But I think I know myself well enough to know that, yeah, probably not for me. And I've maybe aged out of the Burning Man demographic.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_02] I certainly am not going to like hard try to convince you, but...
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_01] Not going to throw me in your trunk and drive me to Burning Man against my will?
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_02] Not against your will. I mean, by the time we get to hanging out a little bit, maybe it'll just jump into my trunk. Yeah, I mean, it's just, it's a great time. You don't have to camp. You can be in an RV and have really nice glamping. So it is your experience to make once you get there.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_01] And so the thing you wanted to share here on After Action Report were these threesomes that you had that were new and wonderful experiences. Yes. Anything else?
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_02] Just that the Orgy Dome is very well curated. They do a really good job. I inadvertently took one other person who I had previously dated and a couple who were like, hey, we heard you go into the Orgy Dome in my camp. And they're like, we just kind of want to see what it's all about. We don't expect to hook up with you. And they felt like really comfortable and safe with us. And I felt like I was taking a field trip of friends to have sex.
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_01] There is something about group sex. It is when they do surveys like Justin Layne Miller's book, Tell Me What You Want. When they do surveys of people's sexual fantasies, some form, the iteration of group sex is almost always at the top of the list, the most popular fantasy. And that can be the threesome, a foursome, moresome.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_01] I actually think there's something deeply coded in our human sexual erotic subconsciousness about group sex, even though it's hugely taboo, even though it's judged and shamed, even though people have been thrown in prison for doing group sex. We evolved in situations, I think, where as a species, we were having group sex. And I think there's some deep DNA embedded cultural sexual erotic memory of group sex.
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_01] Because when I hear about the orgy dome at Burning Man, even though I don't want to walk into the orgy dome at Burning Man, I understand it. And I've been in group sex situations. I've had group sex. I've been to sex clubs in Berlin. So I'm not prim or unwilling to go to a sex club or have group sex in a group sex situation. But when I hear about Burning Man, when I hear about the orgy dome, even though I know it's not for me, I understand why it's for you and the others who go.
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_02] Yeah. I have contacted all the people in this week just to be like, hi, can I have your consent to talk about this? And they were all like, gosh, that was the best time. We felt so safe with each other. And all of our friendships were just enriched by it. And yes, that's like, yeah, you're fucking. Of course, that's great. But really, truly, like it has brought us closer. I'm still in contact with all the people. There's no ill will, you know. So it really was great.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_01] Were you at the Burning Man where the skies opened up and the whole thing turned into mud?
[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_02] Yes.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_01] How long did it take you to get out?
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_02] Oh, I mean, from there to where I live is usually four hours and it took eight, nine, ten, something like that. It was terrible. Oh, my gosh.
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_01] I'm glad you made it out. And you went back even after that. So I sometimes ask people on After Action Report if you would do it again. I think you would do it again. You have done Burning Man and Orgy Dome again and again. I'll sometimes ask people, would you recommend it? You've already recommended Burning Man to everybody. But based on your experience of Burning Man, if somebody's going for the first time, what's the advice you would give them to set them up for a successful Burning Man experience? Whether they're going to have sexual adventures at Burning Man or not.
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_01] What would your advice as a regular or an experienced burner be for a newbie like me if I were to go for the first time?
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_02] Know your comfort levels with regards to the elements and have safe people in your camp that you can go to. It's a very overwhelming experience in terms of like emotionally. Like you do meet a lot of people and it breaks you open in a lot of ways. So having creature comforts at home and humans at home that you really trust. At your base camp.
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_01] To come home at Burning Man.
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_02] Yes, yeah. To go home to them and be able to decompress and feel safe and cry. And I think those above all are the most important things to go with a good solid foundation of.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_01] People. Your little tribe within the larger tribe.
[00:12:06] [SPEAKER_02] Yes, yes. That.
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_01] So not something you would do on your own. Don't go solo to Burning Man is your advice.
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02] Not me personally. I think that it can be done. I think that takes a really great worldly experience already under your belt. And a real strong fortitude. You don't want to rely on a lot of people that you don't know. Mainly because that might not be what they came for. You kind of want to respect that boundary with people. And not always be like interrupting otherwise non-emotional things with, I'm having a breakdown, you know.
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_02] So I think that just knowing your limits, having strong foundation of support is really important.
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_01] Imogen, thank you so much for coming on After Action Report and sharing your experience at Burning Man. Might as well be a report from Mars Space Company for me. But I'm really glad you went to Mars, but I'm not going to get on that rocket ship. I don't think it'll be.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_02] Thank you so much for having me.
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_01] Thanks, Imogen. I'm delighted that you had a great time. You didn't make a burner out of me, but I am glad Burning Man is there for you and everyone else who loves it. If you have a tale of sweaty, patchouli-scented, sandy adventures, write me about them. Send it to me at Q at savage.love. And you might be my next guest on After Action Report.
